Ethiopia's New Plant to Produce High-Quality Building Materials and Stabilize Prices

November 2024

A new manufacturing plant for pre-fabricated building materials has officially begun production in Ethiopia, marking a transformative step for the country’s construction sector. The facility, developed by the Federal Housing Corporation (FHC), received an investment of 1 billion birr and aims to provide high-quality, reliable materials to help stabilize input prices across the industry.

The facility, which has expanded from 4 hectares to 14 hectares, brings together a range of workshops under one roof, including those for wood, metal, glass, aluminum, and elevator manufacturing. Additionally, preparations are underway to install a dedicated pre-fabrication manufacturing unit, expected to enable the construction of taller and more uniform buildings with enhanced quality.

CEO of the Federal Housing Corporation, Rashad Kemal, underscored the plant’s substantial production capabilities during the recent inauguration. The center includes two units specifically for reinforcement compounds, each boasting a production capacity of 100 cubic meters per hour. In total, the plant is projected to produce 202,752 cubic meters of reinforcing compound annually, with anticipated sales revenue of more than 2.29 billion birr.

Equipped with Turkish-made machinery, which was installed by Turkish experts, the plant is now operated by Ethiopian professionals who received specialized training. This project is part of a larger initiative to support Ethiopia's housing development goals and address longstanding challenges within the construction industry.
