Volvo CE and PT Indotruck Utama Lead Indonesia’s Shift to Electric Machinery

January 2025

In a milestone for Indonesia’s heavy equipment industry, Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has introduced the L25 Electric compact wheel loader in collaboration with its local dealer, PT Indotruck Utama (ITU). This initiative marks a significant step toward sustainable operations and the adoption of environmentally friendly solutions in the region.

Trial Overview

The trial of the L25 Electric commenced on August 28, 2024, at a site operated by an Indonesian customer in Central Kalimantan and concluded successfully on October 28, 2024. This two-month trial aimed to demonstrate the practical benefits of electric machinery and align with the customer’s commitment to sustainable development.

Machine Features and Capabilities

The Volvo L25 Electric compact wheel loader integrates Volvo’s trusted compact loader platform with advanced battery technology. It delivers exceptional performance, zero tailpipe emissions, and ultra-quiet operation. Designed as a versatile, multipurpose machine, the L25 Electric supports various attachments such as buckets, forks, and quick couplers, making it an effective substitute for conventional equipment in diverse applications.

Vincent Santoso, Sales and Marketing Director at PT Indotruck Utama, shared his thoughts on the machine’s capabilities: “The L25 Electric is a multipurpose machine that has proven capable of effectively substituting conventional equipment. Its quiet operation and no carbon-emitting nature have been particularly beneficial for operations within enclosed areas. Its 4 to 6 hours autonomy provides uninterrupted operations, allowing intermittent charging during breaks and shift changes.”

Customer and Operator Feedback

Feedback from both the customer and machine operator has been overwhelmingly positive. Operators praised the L25 Electric for its ease of maintenance, versatility, and compatibility with multiple attachments. The absence of significant technical issues during the trial further emphasized the machine’s reliability.

To ensure smooth operations throughout the trial, ITU assigned a standby mechanic to the site, demonstrating a strong commitment to customer support and operational excellence.

Strategic Importance

This trial not only highlights Volvo CE’s innovative approach but also showcases the transformative potential of sustainable technology in real-world applications. The success of the L25 Electric compact wheel loader trial underscores its capability to balance productivity with environmental responsibility, paving the way for a more sustainable future in Indonesia.

Raven Chua, Head of Market West for Region Asia at Volvo CE, emphasized the broader significance of this initiative: “This collaboration with PT Indotruck Utama demonstrates our shared commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation. The L25 electric wheel loader not only reduces carbon emissions but also enhances operational efficiency and safety. By combining cutting-edge battery technology with Volvo’s proven engineering, the L25 Electric addresses the urgent need for solutions that balance productivity with environmental responsibility. This trial is testament to how collaborating with our partners can help us build a more sustainable future.”

Future Plans

Following the success of this trial, Volvo CE and ITU plan to expand their efforts with additional trials in East Kalimantan and Bangka Island during Q1 2025. These forthcoming trials will further showcase the L25 Electric’s potential to revolutionize operations in Indonesia’s heavy equipment industry while meeting the unique needs of customers across various regions.
