Jeddah's $3.2 Billion Renaissance: Landmarks, Museums, and Urban Revitalization

February 2024

Construction contracts worth SR12 billion ($3.2 billion) have been inked, bringing Jeddah closer to realizing its vision of a dynamic entertainment and cultural destination. The Jeddah Central Development Co., backed by the Public Investment Fund, is spearheading the development of three iconic landmarks – a stadium, an opera house, and an oceanarium – alongside crucial infrastructure for the initial phase of the Jeddah Central project.

During a ceremony held on February 5th, CEO Ahmed Al-Saleem announced the imminent commencement of construction on these architectural marvels. The project aims to transform Jeddah into a premier entertainment hub, offering diverse attractions such as a sandy beach, a pier, a seafront promenade, and a marina. Scheduled to welcome visitors by the end of 2027, Jeddah Central will cater to both domestic and international tourists, further solidifying the city's position as a cultural and leisure hotspot within the Kingdom.

In December 2023, the Saudi Ministry of Culture introduced the Tariq Abdulhakim Center in Al-Balad, Jeddah's historic district and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This museum pays tribute to the legacy of the late Saudi composer and musician Tariq Abdulhakim, a key figure in shaping the Kingdom's musical landscape. Abdulhakim's contributions, including his role in establishing the Saudi military band, are celebrated within the museum, enriching Jeddah's societal ecosystem.

Furthermore, in October 2023, the Public Investment Fund established the Al-Balad Development Co. with the aim of transforming the historic district into a global tourist destination. This initiative entails enhancing infrastructure, restoring historical buildings, and developing service facilities. Additionally, the project will deliver 9,300 residential units and 1,800 hotel rooms across a sprawling area of 2.5 million square meters, revitalizing Al-Balad and preserving its cultural heritage for future generations.
