Recently the project, a model for which was developed to be able to respond to several issues, from environmental risks including flooding, to security and emergency response, was declared as the winning project at the Year in Infrastructure 2020 Awards by Bentley Systems. Khatib & Alami was contracted to capture and model 250 square kilometers in Muscat, Oman within 125 days.
The firm faced significant topography, time, and quality challenges, as well as weather issues and compliance with government policies and clearance constraints.
After exploring several options, Khatib & Alami realized that they needed accurate and flexible technology capable of detailed parallel processing to develop a digital twin. Khatib & Alami selected ContextCapture, a 3D Reality Modeling Software by Bentley Systems enabling them to deliver a 3D reality mesh that exceeded the expected deliverables. The company also used LumenRT to simulate risks of environmental change.
Using ContextCapture, Khatib & Alami captured and processed 330,000 images in 90 days, 35 days ahead of schedule, with improved quality and accuracy at reduced costs. The solution automates modeling and workflows, as well as establishes a digital context to maintain and leverage data for future decision-making on urban development, security measures, and natural resource management in desert areas.
