At the 2nd Annual Meeting of the Circular Economy in Construction Industry (CECI) 2024, SCG Smart Living and SCG Cement and Green Solutions, in collaboration with 38 leading companies, gathered at SCG Headquarters in Bang Sue to advance the construction industry’s green standards. The conference focused on green innovation, sustainable development, and efficient material usage in line with the circular economy approach. Experts in environmentally friendly building design were invited to share insights on achieving Net Zero goals.
Mr. Wiroj Rattanachaisit, CEO of SCG Smart Living and Chairman of the CECI Cooperative, emphasized the importance of construction aimed at Net Zero through the Inclusive Green Growth approach. He shared that SCG initiated the CECI Group in 2018 to collaborate with 38 prominent organizations to drive sustainable growth in the Thai construction industry. The group works on developing Smart Design with Green Innovation, ensuring resource efficiency, reducing environmental impacts, and fostering participation in carbon reduction.
In his speech, Mr. Wirot explained, “SCG recognizes the importance of construction that aims for Net Zero in line with the Inclusive Green Growth approach. Therefore, we initiated the establishment of the CECI Group to exchange knowledge and develop approaches in this area together with 38 leading organizations in the construction industry continuously since 2018 to elevate the Thai construction industry to grow sustainably according to the circular economy principle in a tangible way by developing Smart Design with Green Innovation that cares about the impact on the environment and uses resources efficiently, creating participation in reducing carbon with green innovation.”
The conference featured notable experts, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Darunee Jarimit, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Planning at Thammasat University. She discussed building design towards Net Zero, highlighting the importance of sustainability in construction, particularly the role of design in reducing embedded carbon and applying Net Zero principles at city and community levels.
Dr. Wikrom Laowisutchai, Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at Chulalongkorn University, also contributed with insights into Modular Construction. He highlighted Hong Kong as a leading example of modular construction, addressing initial construction challenges, solutions, and the future development of modular techniques.
SCG’s commitment to the Inclusive Green Growth approach extends to its collaboration with partners in the construction industry, including real estate developers, architects, construction consultants, contractors, and waste management companies. The focus is on applying circular economy principles to effectively manage construction waste and promote sustainable practices.
Since its inception, CECI has grown from 12 to 38 members, working together on concrete projects that apply innovative waste management solutions, such as using BIM technology to reduce material usage, minimize construction waste, and save time. These efforts include pilot projects like the King Bridge Tower and other collaborative construction projects that integrate circular economy models and sustainable practices throughout design, procurement, and construction stages.
SCG has played a key role in advising on the creation of the Circular Economy Model, based on Roland Berger’s “10 Circular Business Models for More Sustainable Construction,” and continues to provide expert guidance on applying circular economy principles to various projects.
