Innovative Use of Reclaimed Materials in New Delft Apartment Building

July 2024

Construction has commenced on a unique residential tower in Delft, characterized by its use of wooden pallets and reclaimed materials. The developers, The Urban Woods, aim to incorporate as many reclaimed materials as possible into the 10-story apartment building. Where reclaimed materials are insufficient, they will source wood from a sustainable forest in Austria. For every tree cut down, a new one is planted, as confirmed by co-founder Tim Vermeend in an interview with Omroep West.

The building will feature minimal concrete usage, with most of the construction material comprising partly recycled wood. This wood is pressed into large blocks, which are then used as building materials. Vermeend expressed a preference for using old wood sourced from the Netherlands but acknowledged the insufficiency of such materials. Consequently, the project also relies on sustainable Austrian wood.

“This method represents a breakthrough for CO2 problems,” The Urban Woods stated. The innovative construction technique promises significant environmental benefits.

Fire safety is a crucial consideration for the wooden building. The developers assured that the structure is fire-safe, utilizing cross-glued wood (CLT), which does not pose a fire hazard. The thick, solid wooden plates comply with European regulations, ensuring safety and durability.

Located along the A13 in the Delft Bomenwijk, the apartment building is designed for singles or couples over the age of 27. It is not child- or pet-friendly. The building will feature a rooftop garden, gym, communal kitchen, and library, providing a range of amenities for residents.

Construction began this month, with the first tenants expected to move in by the summer of 2025.
