Lafarge Canada, in collaboration with its subsidiary Innocon, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with The Daniels Corporation to advance sustainable construction practices. By utilizing carbon-smart design principles and optimizing concrete mix designs, the partnership aims to drive sustainability at the Daniels on Parliament development in downtown Toronto.
This significant project will see the use of around 31,000 cubic meters of ECOPact® concrete, covering 75% of the building’s concrete needs. The collaboration is expected to reduce the building’s embodied carbon footprint by up to 25% compared to conventional concrete.
“We are dedicated to leading the way in innovative construction in the GTA by providing more sustainable building solutions that maintain high performance and efficiency,” said Andy Unger, VP, Concrete, Lafarge Canada (East). “Our products not only meet the most rigorous demands of modern construction but also contribute to a more sustainable future. Our teams have worked tirelessly to provide The Daniels Corporation with smart mix designs that are customised to each component of the building to deliver both performance and reduced embodied carbon. This first project will certainly set a new benchmark for the industry.”
Innocon has played a key role throughout the project, conducting thorough assessments for each phase and applying approximately 38 distinct ECOPact® mix designs. Their flexible scheduling helped achieve significant carbon savings while keeping the project on track. This partnership represents the largest use of ECOPact® concrete in high-rise construction in Eastern Canada to date, proving that sustainability improvements can be achieved without sacrificing efficiency. The initiative sets a new industry standard for the potential of strategic collaboration in sustainable construction.
“This unique initiative marks a progressive milestone in how we collaborate to build high-quality living spaces sustainably,” said David Kelly, President, Innocon. “We aim to establish a new standard for sustainable construction in Toronto and to promote further adoption of ECOPact®, our low-carbon concrete solution, in the construction industry.”
“Collaborating with forward-thinking partners like Lafarge and Innocon enables us to drive real progress in decarbonising new home construction,” said Adam Molson, Vice President of The Daniels Corporation. “Through our data-driven partnership, we’re able to make significant strides toward reducing emissions in the homes we build. Our goal is to accelerate the shift toward sustainable practices in construction as quickly as possible.”
The Daniels on Parliament project, located at 365 Parliament Street in Toronto’s Regent Park, consists of a 25-storey tower and a 10-storey tower, offering 642 residential units, underground parking, and retail units on the ground level. Construction is underway and is expected to be completed by mid-2025.
